Driving Phobia And Panic Attacks

After a series of panic attacks triggered by a traumatic event, Sarah no longer drives her car. Her workplace is two miles away but she prefers to walk instead. Sarah gets anxious and apprehensive simply thinking about sitting in her car.

Daily life has changed for Sarah. Even when crossing a road by foot, Sarah will feel her heart race and palms get sweaty. For three years Sarah was a cautious and safe driver but now she has lost all confidence to drive. She is afraid of a having another accident.

She starts having panic attacks even when she’s not in the car. Sarah feels depressed and frustrated that she can’t do the same things she used to do. Thoughts of worry plague her even though she realizes how irrational her worries are. This noticeably affects her ability to work and interact with others.

Traumatic events can cause an anxiety disorder known as Post traumatic stress disorder. This can be a situational experience or an emotional one such as losing a loved one. A sufferer may find themselves reliving the traumatic event frequently and avoiding similar experiences.

Those that know a PTSD sufferer might find that they’re not the person they used to be. Often the family of the sufferer experiences immense strain and are at a loss. A sufferer is likely to want to be left alone and not be in the company of others. This may further develop becoming and anxiety disorder itself known as social anxiety disorder.

People with anxiety disorders often suffer from sleepless nights. They are likely to feel stressed and anxious and overly cautious. For Sarah, getting into a car or any vehicle for her is virtually impossible.

Panic attacks while driving can develop even if the driver has never experienced a traumatic event. Fear of driving can develop for a number of reasons and be enough to cause anxiety and panic attacks. Our minds can create images and thoughts that create negative feelings such as fear and anxiety. We can develop phobias and fear from merely thinking about things which change our behavior.

Sufferers may find them losing confidence and fearing something that never used to be a problem. Mental associations are made all time both negative and positive shaping our beliefs and behaviors. Drivers might suffer anxiety and panic attacks for various reasons. Fears such as;

* Having to drive fast.
* Dealing with lots of traffic.
* Getting cut in front of.
* Getting beeped at.
* Driving long distances.
* Driving in the dark.
