It takes months or even years to cure or manage serious depression, a real mental illness. Millions of Americans across the United States are affected by depression each and every year. Only about a third of them will seek treatment, and that makes it worse.

Because depression is considered a mental affliction, many sufferers shy away from seeking help from a doctor. Rather than being stereotyped, people would rather try to deal with the problem themselves. Depression is more common- place than you might think and it will not go away on its own.

Motor agitation is the distressing experience of being unable to remain stationary, psychic agitation is also recognised as mental agitation, which means a state of pychologicalor mental distress. This may or may not include or be contributed by rushingor frantic thoughts.

Surprisingly or perhaps not so surprisingly, Agitated Depression falls under major depressive episode rather than mixed bipolar disorder, which it more closely resembles. This is according to the DSM-III-R. There are other forms of Agitated Depression. The clinical forms are Psychotic which has the proposed name of Melancholia, Non-psychotic which follows the RDC criteria, and may qualify as an excite factor for anxious depression.

Agitated Depression also displaysin Bipolar Disorder. It is not unusual, however it needs to be properly diagnosed, since it can have a large impact not only on the persons medical prognosis but also on their treatment plan. To qualify for Agitated Major Depressive Disorder you must have two of the following symptoms for more than two days during any episode: pacing, hand wringing, motor agitation, outbursts of shouting, complaining, inability to stop talking, and/or plucking on hair, skin, or clothing.

Depression is a severe illness. If left untreated, it can have grave and sometimes fatal implications not just for the person enduring, but also for those around them. One of the major signals of teenage depression is fatigue and a lack of focused mental attention, such as the ability to concentrate on a task. The depressed teenager may also be irritable, possibly aggressive and excessively anxious. Parents may be privy to outbursts that include crying, shouting, screaming, complaining or threatening to run away.

As with adults, depression may also become visible in a variety of unexplained and incurable physical problems such as aches and pains, headaches and digestive issues like an upset stomach. Other signs include a change in appetite and subsequent weight gain or loss along with a change in sleeping habits, such as insomnia or chronic fatigue. More serious symptoms include talk or thoughts of suicide or death.

If five or more of the above symptoms are exhibited for a period longer than two weeks, mothers and/or fathers should talk to their teenagers and seek professional help. Of course, if there is a threat of suicide, then parents should seek treatment and intervention immediately.

The Causes of Teenage Depression and its Effects

Typically, teenage depression is brought on by external stress factors in their lives such as divorce, family financial problems, experiencing tragedy, sexual or physical abuse, dealing with drug or alcohol addiction either with themselves or a family member and other high-stress situations.

Other teenagers see depression as a result of being unable to reach particular goals, whether these are social, academic, athletics or body goals. For example, if a teenager has trouble making friends or is rejected by their peers, this can often cause depression. Or when depression runs in the family, the teenager may be genetically disposed to the condition.

As for the effects of teenage depression, the onset can drastically impact a teenager’s family life, social relationships and academic accomplishments. Previous studies have shown that teenagers suffering from depression have higher levels of absenteeism, poorer grades and are more likely to abuse drugs or alcohol. Of course, the most severe consequence of teenage depression is suicide, which is why it’s critical to recognize the early signs quickly and seek assistance.

An Overview Of Alzheimers Disease

Alzheimer\’s disease is a disease of the brain and not a mental illness. It is a medical condition which as such, responds to medication and non-medicated approaches to relieving the symptoms and even stalling the progression of Alzheimers.

Alzheimer\’s disease will affect different parts of the brain at different times. The stages can even overlap so that symptoms from different stages are being experienced at the same time.

Children With Down Syndrome Can Have Fullfilling Life

Down syndrome, resulting from the presence of an extra chromosome #21, is the most common genetic disorder that causes mental retardation. Children with Down Syndrome often have upward slanting eyes, unusually shaped ears, broad hands, flattened facial features and a small head. Often, babies with Down syndrome suffer from poor muscle tone, auditory/visual impairments and slow development.

Children with this chromosomal disorder will have tribulations early on. Parents should be aware of the special-care needs for babies with Down syndrome as early as possible, to prepare themselves for the challenges that lie ahead. Some babies require medication to address a heart defect, while others require physical therapy sessions to help develop better muscle tone and coordination. Some syndrome babies have a difficult time learning to breastfeed at first, which is sometimes related to stomach or intestinal blockages. Eye, ear, nose, throat and thyroid problems are not uncommon, as is late teething. The main thing to keep in mind is that the baby will eventually get there, but patience and offering loving support are critical to the child’s development.

Children with Down syndrome often have physical therapy needs as well, but with parental guidance and encouragement, they can learn crucial skills. Babies with Down syndrome can strengthen muscles and improve coordination through directed play. A physical therapist can provide new parents with instructions. Many children learn to eat step-by-step, first hand-fed, then using their fingers, finally learning to use silverware. While learning to dress can take extra time and explanation, the Downs child can learn through practice and repetition. It helps stress the importance of grooming and hygiene by establishing a daily routine, gradually adding new tasks for the child to perform independently. While it seems like a lot of work at first, parents may find they enjoy being a special teacher, and that every small milestone is celebrated. Raising children with this chromosomal disorder encourages parents to embrace the small triumphs in life.

There are certain health risks for children with Down syndrome. About half of all Down syndrome babies are born with congenital heart defects and 60% suffer an eye disease, including cataracts (15%) and the need for corrective glasses or contact lenses (50%). Nearly 75% suffer hearing loss, sleep apnea and persistent ear infections. Other problems include thyroid disease (15%), gastrointestinal atresias (12%) and acquired hip dislocation (6%). Less than 1% of all cases report leukemia or Hirschsprung disease. Over time, adults with Down syndrome may suffer respiratory infections, heart disease, surgery for bowel obstruction or cataracts, hearing loss, epilepsy and osteoarthritis.

How You Think Can Affect Your Health

We’ve been told it before. Think positive, don’t be so negative. Inherently we’ve known that this is a good habit to get into. Now science & research are establishing just how valuable it is. Studies are now showing how powerful prayer is for a person who is unwell. Any self improvement counselor will always focus on expanding your talent to think positively in order to obtain what you want in life.

Religions teach prayer and the power of positive thoughts. Why?
Thoughts are things. What this translates to is that every notion and thus every sentiment we have triggers a definitive electric and chemical outcome in the body. Negative thinking creates negative reactions—causing increased inflammation, acid, break down of tissue & fatigue.
