Flax Seed Oil Benefits - Treating Your Heart Right

Flaxseed is showing up in more and more products because of its benefits to health. Not only is flaxseed nutrient dense, but it contains compounds which may even promote healthy hearts. There are many ways to include flax oil in your food. Flaxseed comes as a ground meal you can add to recipes, as an ingredient in processed foods like cereal and bread, as flaxseed oil, or an oil capsule.

Components of Flaxseed

Flax seeds are comprised of fat, protein and fiber. Several vitamins and minerals are present at high levels in flaxseed including magnesium, manganese and thiamin. If you’re looking for worthwhile omega-3 supplements then this is one form to consider.

The heart health benefit of flaxseed is attributed mainly to its fatty acid profile. Flaxseed is an excellent supplement that’s full of omega-3 fatty acids. It’s believed that eating a proper ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids helps ward off vascular disease. In the typical American diet, about ten grams of omega-6 fatty acids are consumed for every one of omega-3 fatty acids.

The more Omega-3 in your diet the better. But omega-6 fatty acids are more widespread in commonly consumed foods. One way to reach the proper ratios of omega-6 to omega-3 fats for a truly beneficial cardio diet is to eat foods like flaxseed in addition to fish, another source of omega-3s.

Good for the Heart

There aren’t any guarantees that your heart will be healthier if you consume lots of flax oil.

Flaxseed contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids and fiber, two food components known to be heart healthy. Don’t shy off from flax oil because the benefits are numerous: eating flax may reduce blood cholesterol levels, reduce blood glucose levels after eating a meal, and increase blood omega-3 fatty acid levels.

How to Add Flaxseed to Your Diet

You can buy flaxseed already ground as a flaxseed meal. This form of flaxseed is very convenient for adding to recipes or everyday foods. For a product that lasts longer (ground flaxseed turns rancid fairly quickly due to its fatty acid profile) look for whole flaxseeds and grind them as needed.

What is a good serving size of flaxseed? It depends on whether you are adding ground flaxseed or flaxseed oil. For ground flaxseed, start by adding about tablespoon per day to meals and recipes.

One tablespoon contains about 2 grams of fiber, 3 grams of fat (about half of which is healthy omega-3 fatty acids) and many vitamins and minerals. Because of flax’s high fiber content, it’s best to gradually increase the amount of flax you eat each to avoid gastrointestinal problems like constipation.

For flaxseed oil, start with one half to one teaspoon of flaxseed oil. The amount of healthy fats in half a teaspoon of flaxseed oil has been shown to reduce heart disease risk in a recent population study.

One way to add flaxseed to your diet is to use flaxseed in recipes. Ground flaxseed can be added to most baked goods. Just substitute part of the flour with ground flaxseed. Start by using 1/4 cup of ground flaxseed for a full recipe of cookies, muffins, pancakes, waffles or bread. Also, search for tested recipes that already contain flax in larger amounts.

Another choice is to sprinkle ground flax in dishes you eat every day. Use ground flaxseed on top of cereal, yogurt, in smoothies, or even in salad dressing.

Your pharmacy will have flax in many forms. You will not gain the benefit of extra fiber and other nutrients by eating the oil alone, but you will get all the omega-3 fatty acids found in flax.

Soybean Sprouts: Have you Tried Them Yet?

Sprouting is a simple and amazing adventure. I first started sprouting mung beans and alfalfa seeds about thirty years ago. At that time it wasn’t a common thing to see in our western world. It was a little more difficult back then to find like-minded people in this health-nut craze.

Sprouts Can Grow Anywhere

The simplicity of growing sprouts makes them perfect food for any kitchen in any home, climate, city or country. They rival meat in nutritional value, no soil or sunshine is required, they areinexpensive and they grow in 3 to 5 days.

People who are really into growing their own fresh produce find this to be a great solution for the cold or snowy winter months. Since sprouts grow right in your own kitchen, the weather or season doesn’t matter.

Loaded with Protein and Vitamins

Sprouted soybeans, take on some additional and wonderful properties. They do loose a little bit of their protein, more so if you grow them long like shown in the picture. You’ll retain more of the protein if you shorten the growth time.

What surprised and amazed the researchers is the increase in both Vitamin C and Vitamin A that takes place during the sprouting. There is about a 600% increase in the Vitamin C. The Vitamin A increase averages 300%. There is no loss in the B-complex vitamins with the sprouting so these beans turn into a power house of goodness.

The Simple Sprouting Directions:

Wash 1/4 cup soybeans in cold water. Change the water a few times during the wash. Soak the beans in cool water 4 to 12 hours. Overnight should do it. Drain, rinse well and put the beans in a clean mason jar.

Cover the jar opening with cheesecloth held with a rubber band. Or you can get plastic lids with tiny holes in them. Health food stores generally have these. Sprouting kits are a common thing now.

Place the jar on its side somewhere away from any direct or indirect light. I have a brown glass jar that I use to keep the light out. For the next 4 or 5 days, you need to rinse the beans well and drain them well at least twice a day. I’ve found that soybeans sprout better with more rinses, so I generally rinse them 4 or 5 times a day.

Usually during the second day you’ll see the hulls breaking away and falling off. They will float up during the rinsing so that you can remove them from the jar. You can start eating the sprouts anytime after the hull are gone. It’s up to you how long you want them to grow.

Keep the sprouts in the refrigerator and use them within a day or two. They are great for salads and stir-fry or even a snack with a little salt sprinkled on them. Enjoy!

Exposing Health Myths

The health industry is over flowing with a number of health myths that have been heard from the past. With a number of researches and studies on health of a human being, you are able to uncover the reality behind these myths. Next time when someone tells you any of these myths, scream that you know the truth behind these myths. The health information blog has a number of unknown health truths that are vital for a healthy living.

You must drink eight glasses of water everyday – It is true that you have to drink enough amount of water, but the eight glasses measurement is a sure myth. Every man has a different body structure and there is no single rule that fits for everybody. The juices, coffee, tea and other liquid that you take add to fluid content in your body. You should not drink water just to add to the number of glasses of water that you take. You can drink water when you are thirsty, but don’t count on the glasses. At the same time, ensure that you don’t stay for a long time without taking any fluid.

Low carb diets are healthy – A number of people believe that eating low carb diets are healthy and it should be followed. However not many people know about the truth behind these diets. Carbohydrates and proteins are vital for the body. Just by reducing the intake of carbohydrates, you cannot remain healthy. You should take carbohydrates and proteins according to the amount that is required for your body. Never fall into the pit of these unhealthy low carb diets. If you want to shed weight and get rid of fat, take a look at health product review to achieve your goal in a natural way.

Coffee should be completely avoided – This is the most common myth that even the doctors say. Coffee has antioxidants that are crucial to eliminate the free radicals. When you take two to three cups of coffee everyday, you are actually doing something good to your body. Controlled amounts of coffee intake are good, but you should not drink coffee in huge quantities and become addicted to caffeine.

You should not eat normally when you have fever – There are no scientific proofs that validate this myth. Irrespective of the measures you take, the virus responsible for fever stays for 7 to 10 days in the body. Hence you have to take medicines to reduce the infection and the diet that you take has nothing to do with it. You need to keep your body hydrated and drink ample amounts of fluids. You have to know the vital health and nutrition tips that help you be active and healthy even if you are sick.

Soymilk Lovers: Soak the Soybeans

Soybeans contain more protein than any other food we eat.  But they need to go through a small amount of preparation before we make that pot of fresh soymilk.

Soak, Soak, Soak

Bean soup was a regular on the list of meals in my house when growing up.  The beans were always set out in a pot of water the night before so they could go through the swelling process.  I don’t know if my mother really knew the value of this step other than the advantage of the beans cooking faster.

Just like you would soak pinto, black or any other bean, it’s very important to soak the soybean for at least 6 hours.  Soybeans contain an enzyme called trypsin.  Soaking breaks that enzyme down so the wonderful protein contained in soybeans becomes digestible.

Soaking  also reduces another enzyme called lipoxgenase and helps remove some of that “beany” taste.  And, of course, we want to cut down the starches with soaking to reduce flatulence.

Enjoy the Benefits

Once the soybeans have been soaked for 6 to 12 hours and you cook them with a Soyabella Soymilk Maker, which is set at the optimum temperature, you’ll reap the wonderful protein benefits.

Why Yogurt Is So Healthy For Us

It’s all about the live bacteria that’s in the yogurt.  It helps in digestion and protects you against harmful bacteria.

When most people hear the word bacteria, it’s automatic to think things like “bad and harmful.”  But there truly is such a thing as good bacteria.

The live cultures that you add to the milk of your choice when making yogurt plays a major role in many of the healthy qualities yogurt contains.

Contribution to Colon Health.  Much of our health is dependent on the health of our colon.  Yogurt is made with intestinal-friendly bacterial cultures that help foster a healthy colon.  These cultures can lower the chance of colon diseases.  Friendly bacteria deactivate harmful substances such as nitrites and nitrates before they can become carcinogenic or cancerous.

Boost Immunity.   Research has shown that daily eating of yogurt produces higher levels of immunity boosting interferon.  It’s also been discovered that these bacterial cultures stimulate the white cells in the bloodstream to help them fight infection.

Lower Cholesterol.  Some studies are showing that yogurt can help reduce blood cholesterol.  One reason for this may be because yogurt binds bile acids, which is known to lower cholesterol.   Another reason may be because the live cultures can assimilate the cholesterol getting it to move through the body.

Decrease Yeast Infections.  Research has also shown that women who eat yogurt daily have a decreased incidence of vaginal yeast infections.  Once again, it’s the live cultures at work fighting against the bad bacteria.

Helps with Other Nutrients.  Yogurt cultures increases the absorption of B-vitamins and calcium.  With this assistance in digestion your body will absorb and be able to use more of the goodness in the other foods you eat.

Help with Healing After Illness.  If you’ve had to take antibiotics for any reason, your body needs bacterial help.  Antibiotics kill the healthy bacteria right along with the harmful.   The live bacterial cultures in yogurt can help keep the harmful ones from taking over in the intestines.  It’s a good practice to eat yogurt every day while taking antibiotics and continue for a couple weeks after the antibiotics.

The only thing that could make yogurt better is homemade yogurt.  With all these wonderful attributes, you can make it even better by having it fresh.  Store-bought contains additives to give longer shelf life, but even so, the bacteria value weakens over time.

Acai Juice In Your Every Day Life

Acai juice comes from the Acai berry grown wild in the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. The acai berries are an extreme deep purple color with limited pulp and they are grown on native palm trees.

Normally with fruit juice products, the fruit is better than the juice. This is not the case with the Acai berry. Consisting of 90% nut and only 10% fruit pulp, the Acai berry cannot be consumed without first extracting the juice from the fruit pulp. Most people say that Açaí Juice tastes like a berry and chocolate combined.

Açaí Juice is extremely popular in its native country and it is often in more demand than milk. With its incredible nutritional value, this juice has been said to be an entire meal in itself. Acai Juice is a very good source of Omega fatty acids, protein, and so much more. During the picking season, the acai berries soak in water so they can become soft, making it easy for the seed to be removed. The juice is then created from the fruit pulp using a little water and oil. Traditionally, the Brazilian natives would crush the berries to extract the juice.

Acai juice is very well known around the world for its amazing health benefits. Many claim that acai juice can help with arthritis, muscle irritation, pain, and the aging of our skin. Studies are being done around the world to find out the effects of acai juice on things like cancer, heart attacks, cardiovascular issues, and more.

The health benefits of acai juice are plentiful. Production of this native Amazonian berry has created many jobs for the people of Brazil, as there are currently more than 60 pulping and freezing factories located in this region. The harvesting of the acai berry is still done by hand to protect the rain forest. To avoid damage, acai berries are usually processed within 24 hours. Teams of workers will pic k the berries and get them to the factory for processing within this time frame.

With the number of benefits from this juice on the rise, its no wonder Acai is taking the health markets by storm. Acai juice is safe for daily consumption as a great part of any diet.
